The Cullman Christkindlmarkt is home to the world's largest walk-through Schwibbogen — a traditional German Christmas candle arch standing 24 feet 4 inches tall and 47 feet 5 inches wide. It surpasses the previous largest of its kind, the Dresden Striezelmarkt’s walk-through Schwibbogen measured at 13.30 meters wide and 6.63 meters high, the record that stood before Cullman's was built. Inspired by the famed arch of Dresden's historic Striezelmarkt, Cullman's Schwibbogen lets guests walk beneath the arch and along an elevated walkway above it, taking in panoramic views of the market below.

What Is a Schwibbogen?

A Schwibbogen is a traditional German candle arch — a glowing, semicircular decoration that originated among the miners of Germany's Ore Mountains. Its arc of lights symbolized the miners' longing for daylight through the long winter months spent underground, and the shape became a beloved wintertime window decoration across German-speaking regions. Today, oversized Schwibbögen crown Christmas markets throughout Germany and, now, the American South.

Measured at 24 feet 4 inches tall and 47 feet 5 inches wide, Cullman's Schwibbogen exceeds the dimensions of the largest walk-through candle arch that existed before it, the Dresden Striezelmarkt’s walk-through Schwibbogen, measuring at 13.30 meters wide and 6.63 meters high. Unlike a purely decorative arch, Cullman's is built to be experienced from every angle: guests walk through it at ground level and climb to an elevated walkway that crosses the top, offering one of the best views of the entire Christkindlmarkt.

The Schwibbogen stands at the Cullman Christkindlmarkt in Depot Park, downtown Cullman, Alabama, open November 19 through December 23, 2026. Admission and parking are free. It's one of two record-setting German structures at the market, alongside the largest Weihnachtspyramide in North America.
