The Weihnachtspyramide
(German Christmas Pyramid)
The Cullman Christkindlmarkt is home to the largest Weihnachtspyramide in North America — a towering, rotating wooden German Christmas pyramid that stands over 40ft tall at the heart of the market. It surpasses the previous largest on the continent, the Glühwein Pyramid at Carmel Christkindlmarkt in Carmel, IN, and it's lit each evening as a centerpiece of the Christkindlmarkt, including the season-opening Lighting of the Christmas Pyramid.
North America's tallest Christmas Pyramid has ascended to new heights, proudly standing over 40 feet tall!
An annual must-see at Christmas in Cullman is the Christmas pyramid. Known in German as Weihnachtspyramide, it's a traditional German decoration of wooden figures that represent different symbols and seasonal elements. Typically the pyramid is hung from the ceiling or set on a small table, but ours is over 40 feet tall and is the tallest one in North America. The size tiers of the Cullman pyramid each feature different scenes, including one that will pay tribute to our local police and firefighter departments. You can find the pyramid located next to the Cullman County Museum.
A Closer Look At Our Christmas Pyramid
01
The Nativity Scene
The first level located at the bottom features the Nativity scene: Mary kneeling at the manger, Joseph with his lantern, the wise men, & of course a swaddled baby Jesus.
02
Nutcrackers
The second level displays decorative nutcrackers which are common in German traditions. German folklore is that a nutcracker was given as good luck keepsakes to families to protect their homes.
03
Santa & Snowmen
The third level shows jolly St. Nicholas with a bag of goodies on his back & some dressed up snowmen, because what is Christmas without these two?
04
Honoring Cullman
The fourth level represents some familiar faces to our hometown such as the founder of Cullman, Johann G. Cullmann, local law enforcement, first responders, and local citizens of Cullman.
05
Angels
The fifth level shows large winged angels holding candles in both hands as they light the way to the birth of Jesus.
06
Angels in Heaven
The very top level shows angels in heaven rejoicing at the Birth of Jesus with their harps, trumpets, and bells.
What Is a Weihnachtspyramide?
A Weihnachtspyramide, or German Christmas pyramid, is a rotating wooden carousel of tiered platforms, first crafted in Germany's Ore Mountains in the late 1700s as an economical alternative to the Christmas tree. Traditional pyramids feature one to five levels decorated with nativity scenes, winter figures, and forest motifs. They remain cherished holiday decorations across German-speaking countries, and larger versions crown Christmas markets around the world.
How Does a Christmas Pyramid Work?
A Weihnachtspyramide is powered by heat, not motors. Candles placed around the base warm the rising air, which turns a fan-bladed rotor at the top, spinning the decorated tiers below. It's the same principle that makes a pinwheel turn — a centuries-old piece of ingenuity that still delights visitors today.
What Makes Cullman's the Largest in North America?
At over 40 feet, Cullman's Weihnachtspyramide is larger than any other on the continent, surpassing the Glühwein Pyramid at Carmel Christkindlmarkt in Carmel, IN. It anchors the center of the Christkindlmarkt, crowning the market's main drink hut, and its nightly lighting is one of the most photographed moments of the season.
Where Can I See It?
The Weihnachtspyramide stands year-round-famous at the Cullman Christkindlmarkt, Depot Park, downtown Cullman, Alabama — open November 19 through December 23, 2026, with free admission and parking. It shares the market with the world's largest walk-through Schwibbogen.
