Since launching in its full-scale format, the market has welcomed hundreds of thousands of guests and generated significant economic activity for Cullman's downtown businesses, hotels, restaurants, and retailers. Third-party visitor analytics from the 2025 season further demonstrated the festival's expanding reach. CULLMAN, AL - With the unveiling of the world's largest walk-on Christmas arch, the small Southern city of Cullman, Alabama is rapidly emerging as one of America's most dynamic and compelling holiday market destinations.

The City of Cullman unveiled a record-breaking architectural landmark on November 20, 2025, as part of the rapidly expanding Cullman Christkindlmarkt. Standing 20 feet 4 inches tall and spanning an extraordinary 47 feet 5 inches wide, the new walk-on Christmas arch surpasses the scale of Dresden's famed Schwibbogen — a marquee attraction in a city internationally recognized as the birthplace of Germany's Christmas-market traditions.

This announcement positions Cullman's Christkindlmarkt among the most significant holiday markets in the United States, blending ambitious craftsmanship, cultural authenticity, and immersive design in a manner rarely seen outside Europe.

Commissioned by Mayor Woody Jacobs and the Cullman City Council, the arch was constructed by CPRST under the project leadership of John Caples, David Caples, and Kyle Clark, with engineering led by Erica York. The structural steel — which also forms the elevated walkway allowing guests panoramic views of the market — was fabricated by Apel Machine, while CPRST craftsmen built the wooden façade. The handcrafted figurines and candles adorning the arch were crafted and imported from Erzgebirgische Holzkunst Gahlenz, the same German artisans who produced Cullman's iconic Christmas pyramid.

As a city founded by German settlers, Cullman has long embraced the traditions and symbols that define European Christmas markets. Leaders emphasized that this new structure honors those traditions while creating a uniquely American expression of them.

CULLMAN, AL -- In a small Southern town of just 20,000 people, Christmas has become both big business and an even bigger source of joy. Each winter, Cullman transforms into a charming European-style holiday village known as the Cullman Christkindlmarkt, now regarded by many as one of the largest and most authentic German-style Christmas markets in the United States.

Founded in 1873 by German settlers, Cullman has long celebrated its heritage through its architecture, cuisine, and community traditions. Among the newest additions is Käthe Wohlfahrt, Germany's most famous Christmas store, opening its first Alabama location inside Festhalle Market Platz, the state's largest timber-frame structure. Visitors can browse handmade goods, sip mulled wine, and watch master craftsmen at work.

Around every corner, guests find something unexpected. The market offers Alabama's largest outdoor ice rink, a 108-foot Ferris wheel, a rare Venetian-style double-decker carousel, a 100-foot tubing slide, a festive swing ride, and live artisan demonstrations by a world-record-holding glassblower, a Ukrainian blacksmith, and a traditional coppersmith. Each brings a piece of Old-World artistry to the American South.

At the center of it all stands a new showpiece: a 46-foot-wide, 21-foot-tall walk-through Schwibbogen, or candle arch, inspired by the arch at Dresden's famous Striezelmarkt. Built entirely of wood and anchored to a steel bridge that allows guests to climb for a sweeping view of the Christmas market below, the structure is believed to be the largest walk-through wooden Schwibbogen in the world.
